IRE260H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Cultural Relativism, Appropriate Behavior, Organ Donation
Document Summary
We engage in conflict and work in teams and often lead groups, but one situation that is most challenging is being in a situation of powerlessness. Powerless is feeling like you genuinely can"t do anything about a problem. Student: being able to make decisions over others. Sometimes power is given in association with a position --- legitimate power. Students have power because they can organize, complain, make evaluations, drop out of course. Legitimate power --- when a person"s position or job gives a person power; power that is legitimate comes from formal role or structure (teacher, coach, queens, prime ministers, bosses, parents) Reward power --- (big bang theory video --- rewarding good behaviour with chocolates) --- derived from the ability to provide positive and prevent negative outcomes. Example: boss giving you a pay raise for good performance. Coercive power --- (horrible bosses video) --- power that is derived from punishment and threat.
