Document Summary

Characters in the novel tend to be highly exaggerated. This somewhat unrealistic and exaggerated representation of character appeals to popular culture. An example of this is ms. havisham"s character, as she sits around home in a tattered wedding dress, with an old wedding cake that has spiders running in and out of it, etc. Although great expectations and emma were written only 40 years apart, they are extremely different novels and tackle similar social issues in very different ways. These differences can be attributed to two things. 1) dickens and austen had very different upbringings and backgrounds and 2) there were many changes in the world during this period because of the industrial revolution. In austen"s world, a person is born into a particular social class, and remains in that class for all of their life. In dicken"s world, people are able to change their social class through will. In austen"s world every class has a given value.
