Document Summary

The only actual plot in the passage is the measuring of the stocking. There is a hell of a lot of other shit that"s all exterior to that. Doesn"t sound like auerbach until page 531: questions who is describing the sadness. The narrator/author doesn"t seem to know what"s going on. Woolf has a lack of knowledge about her characters and the situations/feelings that they have: seems like woolf is just as confused as the reader, not an objective statement, the narrator/author is not omniscient. The author is supposed to present reality for us but instead they verge on reality: the author/narrator cannot come in and explain what is going on. Auerbach is as confused as we are about the personage speaking the passage: he"s unsure of why the narrator is not omniscient. Parenthesis is the current passage but we move beyond reality through all these external tidbits.
