Portuguese: wanted to cut on middlemen on spice trade, root to se asia islands was main goal for european exploration, goa (india), melaka (islands), macao (china, compete with arab merchants, government sponsored trade and oceanic voyages. English: stronger and better organized , english east india company (1600 & 1650s) dominate trade /w se asia, sponsored but not run by government, regional economy became more oriented around and focused on trade with english.
