1. He talks about the causes of a lack of enlightenment and it is necessary
for people to englighten themselves

LOUIS XVI IGNORED THE PARLIAMENT AND INSTEAD CALLED THE
ASSEMBLY OF NOTABLES ( the heads of the parliament) to Paris
hoping to push tax reform through them
May1788- Louis XVI disbands the Parliaments in reponse
1788: financial crisis reaches boiling point [ inflaition] [hit tfrance

1. first and second estates was more liberal
a. third Estate more radical than expected : comprised by lower social
rank and civil servants, influenced by the Enlightenment
b. all three were radical
c. all of them want reform !
1. Procedural problems
3rd estate had a problem with them
two estates need to agree on something and then passé it
3rd estate then demand to vote by delegate rather than per Estate
a. Estate losses its patience june 1789 they succed and declared
themselves as National Assembly of France
b. Sent invitation to the people of other Estate
a. They tried to ruin the system

II. Started negotiation
a. June 20 to Versa-> King knows about what they are going to do
b. Tennis Court Oath -> they declared that they will not leave the building
until constitution is drawn and sworn
c. Very effective rebellion
d. After three days the king agree to limited reforms but only in exchange
for voting by Estate so the King can have
e. Then few weeks later the king agrees to voting by head and to a
constitution but only If drawn by all three Estates together
f. But the people of Paris is afraid that the King will do sth and started to
army themselves if the Royal Army arrived
g. San Culottes and Paris Communes -> organized by them to protect
people
III. People of Paris gathered and decided to march in Bastille
a. Storming of the Bastille
b. Marching there to get the prision guards’ weapons
c. Became an important day for France
i. Symbol of popular resistance against corrupted authority
ii. At this point Sans Cluottes take over Paris
1. People of France became more radical
IV. Rise of Constitutional Assembly
a. National Assembly renamed it self as Constitutional Assembly-> goal to
get Constitution
b. Remove the old privilege system
c. Create a political program
d. Draw a constitution
e. Summer 1789 -> The great Fear
i. In the country side he peasants declided to rebel
ii. The wanted to burn the estates
iii. Destroy the records
iv. Changed their attitude -> they want to coporiate
August 4, 1789
o End of the Old Regime
o Vicomte de Noailles-> he announced his priviledges
