HIS243H1 Lecture 2: Lecture 2 - Social Structures in Early Modern Europe
Document Summary
Cities are a symbol; thought of their cities around the towers. There"s a strong, civic patriotism as well as a deeply religious patriotism (i. e. in the form of religious shrines, churches, processions) Civic patriotism closely tied with religion and religious obligation. Cities are divided into quarters or sixths in the case of venice (?: everyone has an allegiance to their respective quarter/sector of the city. Cohesion and division: within the city, there"s cohesion where there"s allegiance to the city as a whole, and division, where the people"s allegiances to their respective area causes dispute amongst themselves. Different factions controlled different parts of the city. Bologna, for example, doesn"t have a poor/rich neighbourhood: the rich tend to settle in the center of the city, wealthy people place themselves in different areas of the city to exercise political control over a neighbourhood. There"s a clear political and religious geography, not much economic geography. Venice is divided by canals, connected by bridges.
