It is sometimes asserted that canada did not have slavery because of the role of. Canada as a safe haven for american slaves, but we do have a history of native and black slavery. Even after, the kinds of notions that informed that system worldwide distinctions between white settler societies and those of other races remained. Often the distinction was religion or based on notions of savagery, and/or science, which came into in the picture later, in the 19th and 20th century. When canada was granted dominion, policies came into place formal and informal. This included the indian act in 1876, barriers to immigration for asians, informal immigration to african immigration, laws that restricted entry of non-whites (e. g. the chinese head tax), etc. These began a system of requiring immigrants to have papers and to have intensive screenings and detentions. For political reasons, exclusions had to take on di erent forms.
