Lecture 8 – The Seven Years War The Seven Years War officially began in 1756 in Europe although contestants had been engaged in open conflict in North America since 1754. The war started between the British and French over the allegiance of the Aboriginals people in the Ohio country and for sovereignty of the region. The French had built tablets and military posts in the region establishing claim and in 1753 the British sent George Washington to the fort with a letter requesting the French to leave, they refused. They sent Washington back a year later with 159 men to establish a fort and on the way they were involved in a skirmish and the French commander Jumonville was wounded and then murdered by an Aboriginal fighting for the British.
