JHA410H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Cerebral Peduncle, Neuroimaging, Occipital Lobe
Document Summary
Typically, we think of strokes occurring in older adults; however, strokes can also occur in children and neonates. In fact, highest stroke risk in lifetime is the first week of life. Stroke during gestation is leading cause of cerebral palsy in children carried to term. There are many causes of stroke in children, for example, birthing complications, heart disease, blood clotting disorders, infections, surgery, sickle cell anaemia, leukemia, etc: 4/10 in cases are idiopathic (i. e. unknown) We already know that mri can be used in diagnosis (dx); in this lecture we will go over how mri is used to assess function (fmri), structure (dti), and permeability of blood-brain barrier (bbb) Plasticity refers to the ability of brain to change due to learning, experience, and even injury. Since stroke is an injury to the brain, plastic changes might result in loss of function (e. g. injury in occipital lobe may impair visual function)
