Document Summary
Fifth of the song cycle winterreise (winter"s journey) A song cycle is a series of poems set to music by a composer. The poems are usually by a single poet. Schubert"s winterreise consists of twenty-four poems written by wilhelm. In the poems, a young man revisits places he"s been in the past spring and summer during the cold of winter. During the previous spring and summer, he met and wooed a young woman . Written in 1827, when schubert was growing ill from syphilis. Sense of gloom and despair may be a reflection of schubert"s feelings during the time of writing: der lindenbaum, or the linden tree, contrasts the young man"s memories of the tree with its current state. During the spring and summer, the young man lay dreaming beneath the tree and carved loving words into its bark (clearly he didn"t think much of the tree )
