HPS100H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Monism, Physicalism, Materialism
Document Summary
Neuroscience: the mind is a product od the brain processed. This implies ontological physicalism: that there is only one substance matter. You can have thing s with mind and matter, but you cannot have matter without mind. All things are essentially of one kind two. Pluralism: there are many distinct substances, i. e. many distinct kinds of things. Dualistic determinism: view that all material processes are strictly deterministic; their future states strictly follow from their past states. But this does not apply to mental process in newton"s and descartes world view b/c in their ww, mind is separate substance is not subject to the laws of physics. Strict determinism: everything is predetermined and this applies to all processes, including the processes in the mind: our choices, our decisions, our thoughts everything. Indeterminism: for some initial conditions, there is an infinite number of possible outcomes.
