Lecture 1: the immune system, a historical perspective. Immune system: system of tissues, cells and soluble products recognize, attack and destroy entities that endanger our health when they enter our bodies. Pathogens (cause diseases) and have four major types bacterium, virus, fungus and parasite. Mechanisms to destroy pathogens innate immunity and adaptive immunity. Antigen: protein/polysaccharides including parts (coats, cell walls, flagella) of bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms that are recognized by the immune system; immune system produces antibodies that attach to antigen destroy it. Antibodies: proteins found in blood/other bodily fluids in vertebrates used by immune system to identify and neutralize foreign objects such as bacteria and viruses.
