INI201H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Phronesis, Temporality, Kairos
Document Summary
Fear may be defined as a pain or disturbance due to a mental picture of some destructive or painful evil in the future. Of destructive or painful only; for there are some evils, e. g. wickedness or stupidity, the prospect of which does not frighten us: i mean only such as amount to great pains or losses. Ethos -- appeals made by the rhetorician that are designed to build his or her credibility with the audience. The more logical argument does not necessarily win out. Ethos relies on credibility or believability, which is more subjective. An orator who is credible in one context may seem untrustworthy in another. Which emotions do i need to stir in this particular audience?) The orator means to persuade an audience of a certain opinion on a certain matter. Moreover, happiness is the shared telos of all human life. In archery, kairos refers to a long tunnel-like passageway through which the archer"s arrow has to pass.
