What are graphic novels? How are they different from comic books?
• Graphi oels are ooks ade up of ois otet – however, they are usually longer in length and are limited
to a selected number of volumes [not serialized series]
• Graphic novels actually back to the late 1700s, while comic books emerged in the 1930s
• Both comic books and graphic novels use a combination of illustrations and words to tell a story
• McCloud argues that the medium offers range and versatility with all the potential imagery of fil and painting plus
the intimacy of the written word (Crutcher 2011: 56)
• Graphic novel and comics are mediums that provided reader with a unique experience of a film-like narrative
– stories moved through the actions within the panels [can tell a story with one or two pages]
• Comics can have more complexity than any medium due its control of atmosphere and layering of characters and
motives – the jutapositio of the ois otet [dark ad gritt otet, like Bata] ad soiets pereptio
of ois [ofte see as hildres ooks]
Batman: Inspiration and Creation of the Masked Hero
• Bob Kane, creator and illustrator of Batman, was inspired by these three elements in his creation of Batman: da
Viis odel of a flig ahie alled the Ornithopter, the film, The Mask of Zorro, and the film, The Bat
Whispers
• The Bat Whispers – most important element of Batman, the film was adaption of Mary Roberts Rinehart
• The film revolves around a detective who tries to track down a killer called The Bat and at the end, the
detective is revealed to be the killer himself
• The aesthetis of the deteties lak roe ad at-shaped head created an ominous mood toward Kane
• The most important aspect of Batmas origis – the death of his parets [Brue Waes deisio to eoe the
masked hero revolves around his quest to avenge the killer of his parents]
• Child psychologist believed that there are three qualities of a post-traumatic experience: long-lasting,
repetitive and grim – therefore, creating the multiple re-eatet of the death of Brue Waes parets
within every batman story
• This traumatic experience became the defining characteristic of Bruce Wayne as every Batman story will have
a reminder of Brue Waes past as the reaso for eoig Bata
Duality: What is Duality and why is it important to the Batman story?
• Duality can be defined by these two definitions:
• The quality or condition of being dual
• An instance of opposition or contrast between two concepts or two aspects of something; a dualism.
[examples: day and night, yin and yang, black and white, etc.]
• Batman vs the Joker [Amongst Other Villains]
• The most famous Batman villain of all time is the Joker – he represets a part of Batas duality concept
[He is the yin to his yang – both need each other to be a complete dualism]
• However, the villains within the Batman universe all shared the same origin story as Batman: all have a
traumatic experience that eventually defined them
• This is a costat reider of Batas path after the death of his parets i relatio to his enemies, who
lost sight of their original goals to have their past dictated their future in a negative way.
• The opleit ad depth of eah idiidual illai shos ee the multiple complexities and depth of our
