Document Summary

Interactional display (covert or overt) to a novice of expected ways of thinking, feeling, acting (ochs, 1986) Ability to recognize/interpret what social event is taking place and to speak/act in ways that are sensitive to the context. Takes a really long time up to 6-8 years of age. Permissible for children to not be as polite, use improper terms of address, etc. More obvious in cultures that use different verbal forms (e. g. , french) Presented to children throughout development: not as important in early stages. At home: with parents, caregivers (nannies, babysitters), siblings, relatives, friends, neighbours, etc. Daycare: staff, other kids, kids" parents, takes child out of family environment (restricted) and gives them a chance to interact with strangers (at first) and a community. This perspective emphasizes: the reciprocal, bidirectional influence of the communication environment, the responsiveness of communicative partners roleplay, the child"s own developing communicative competence. Children learn to affect the behaviour/attitudes of others through active signaling.
