The ptolemaic family: p. 326 of textbook: lots of intermarriage with cleopatra and ptolemy vi, viii, ptolemy viii marries his dead brother"s wife, cleopatra ii and kills her son. Ptolemy vii and then he marries his niece cleopatra iii and they flee to cyprus. A new player gets involved: the romans in the mediterranean. Ptolemy v the rosetta stone, in two languages (egyptian and greek) then two egyptian scripts (hieroglyphs and cursive) Jean-francois champollion is credited for cracking the code of the rosetta stone. There were also cartouches on the rosetta stone in hieroglyphs and champollion made connections that they were royal names, used greek sources to decipher cartouches. Famous city of the ptolemaic dynasty: alexandria, lots of underwater archaeology. The famous lighthouse at pharos is one of the seven wonders of the world. Great temples of the ptolemaic period: really well preserved, temple of hathor at dendera. Dendera temple: cleopatra vii and her son caesarion (son with julius caesar)
