NFS284H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Weight Gain, Weight Loss, Birth Weight
Document Summary
For overweight or obese women: weight loss should occur before pregnancy, weight gain should be kept to a minimum during pregnancy. For normal weight women: additional energy needs during pregnancy (350-450 kcal in last 2 trimesters *14-40 weeks of pregnancy) Include 2-3 extra food guide servings (ex. extra slice of toast for breakfast and an extra glass of milk at dinner) Inutero famine exposure compared to siblings not exposed to famine. Increased risk of: obesity, atherogenic lipid profile, hypertension, coronary heart disease. Siblings born after mother developed diabetes compared to siblings born before mother developed diabetes. Increased concentration of amniotic fluid insulin associated with: obesity. Impaired glucose tolerance: poorer intellectual and psychomotor development. Possible risk factors for adult obesity that may occur in infancy. Increased birth weight: reduced breastfeeding, reduced sleep duration. Increased weight gain during first weeks of life. Assessing infant growth: 50 percentiles = average, overweight = 85-97 percentile, obese > 97 percentile.
