Document Summary

Epilepsy definition: epilepsy group of neurological disorders characterized by spontaneous, recurrent seizures. Seizure disorder is another word: seizures periods of self-sustained neural hyper-excitation. During a seizure, the forebrain neurons in the brain cease their normal activities and begin to fire in massive, synchronized bursts. Blood flow to the brain is increased and there is a greater use of glucose and oxygen. After seconds or minutes when the inhibitory mechanisms of the brain regain control, the seizure ends. Diagnosis of epilepsy: for epilepsy to be diagnosed, seizures must be: Recurring two or more (10% have 1 seizure) In non-epileptic people the seizure threshold is high and seizures do not occur spontaneously. In people with epilepsy the brain or a part of the brain has a low threshold and from time to time the brain"s own activity triggers an attack. In reflex epilepsy, the part of the brain with a low threshold can sometimes be guessed.
