PHL206H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Summa Theologica, Averroism, Moral Influence Theory Of Atonement
Document Summary
The two universities that taught philosophy and theology in the 1200s were the. Philosophy consisted of aristotle and theology consisted of the bible and the sentences & commentaries. Later they were replaced by the summa theologiae by aquinas. During bonaventure"s time, he thought that people were getting too interested in the arts instead of theology. They used two scholastic teaching methods: lectures and disputations. Lectures were simply a younger teacher reading the text aloud while students took notes. Disputations had three players: two bachelors and one master. It was a dialectical exercise where they participated in a disputed question. The 2 bachelors, who were upper level undergrads, would split up into for/against and answer the master"s disputed question. The master would then give the right answer and respond to both arguments. The master had the right to determine the answer to the question as well to teach anywhere.
