Philosophy Tutorial May 23, 2012 TA: Dave Suarez Meditation three • Meditation one he’s motivated the method of doubt • Second meditation is the cogito and what we are • We get knowledge from the cogito • A substance is anything that can exist in itself; definition that Descartes give is at the bottom of page 37 • A mode is a modification of a substance; a way that something can be • A thought is a mode of thinking • Only thing that can be known with certainty is the existence of oneself • Whatever is perceived as clearly and distinctively is true o He uses that in order to secure o Things you clearly and distinctively perceive are given to you by the natural light of reason • Where do my ideas come from? o Innate [something you are born with] o Acquired through experience [adventitious] o Things that come from you • Objective and formal reality
