Philosophy Lecture May 23, 2012 Essay • Locate the argument and explicate it • Basically teaching the material to Dave Descartes • Ontology: study of being [theory about reality or the nature of things] • Substances: are subject to predication • Aristotle: substance is able to persist through changes • Descartes: substance is a thing that is suitable for existing in itself o Only one substance can exist which doesn’t need anything else- God o Mode: modification or diversification of a substance. Ex. a carpet and a wrinkle- the wrinkle is a modification of the substance [carpet] a mode is a way of being [one way a carpet can be is wrinkled o The mind doesn’t depend on any particular mode Spinoza • His formulations of mode, attribute and substance are very similar
