PHL201H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Mind Control, Empiricism, Justin Trudeau
Document Summary
Lecture 4 james: the will to believe. Gettier reading: relationship between knowledge, justification, truth, but not exactly easy to say what this relationship is. Always counter-examples: why does defining knowledge matter: If pick one or the other you are believing without sufficient evidence: ex: should we believe in god or not. Assume there isn"t sure evidence on either side (not clear) Don"t believe god exists and don"t believe he doesn"t exists. But the suspension of belief in this case seems to carry bad consequences. Let"s say your life would be better if you believed in god. Problem that both pascal and james would claim, is that if you suspend your belief, then you forgo the benefits of believing in god. Since there is influence of belief on actions, then suspending your belief would still have consequences. Say you"ve narrowed down from a lot of many other careers and you find that either one of these will be the best.
