PHL240H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: If And Only If, Intentionality
Document Summary
Descartes: 2 types of substance: material vs. Lecture 3 13/01/14: material substances: essentially extended and essentially non-thinking. When descartes talks about extension is something to do with space: something is extended if it takes up space; it is spatial. Non-thinking: matter does not have consciousness and intentionality: furthermore, substances are particular. Properties: features or qualities that particulars have. When something has a property, we say it instantiates that property: not just particulars have properties, but properties can also have properties. There are monadic properties: just 1 particular is necessary for it to be instantiated. Poliatic properties: property: a is a student of b. Accidental: accidental iff it is not essential, so your body is a particular, and it has property of being extended, and that property is essential. Extrinsic vs. intrinsic property: extrinsic property iff a duplicate of the particular that instantiates that property can vary in that property.
