Document Summary

Part 1: virtue and the good life aristotle"s ethics. What actually leads people to happy states (these are modern questions) There are two schools of thought good acting is 1. Knowledge: aristotle says we determine the good of something based on its ability to ful ll its function. E. g. a knife is meant to cut therefore a good knife cuts well: since the chief good is reason, it seems that the good life is going to live a life in accordance with reason. Aristotle thinks there is theoretical reason and practical reason. The difference between the two is that they have different objects. Theoretical reason is aimed at the truth, wha you are trying to do is. Practical reason is focussed not on what is true but on what is good: what is it to live in accordance to reason, the human being should be oriented towards what is really true and worthy of desire.
