The metal element on an electric stove produces electromagnetic (em) radiation even if the stove is not operating. Consider an object called a blackbody that absorbs all em radiation incident upon it and then emits radiation. The metal element is a fairly good approximation to a blackbody. Blackbody radiation consists of a continuous band of wavelengths that depends on the temperature of the object. Graph of the measured intensity of the radiation from a blackbody at every wavelength for temperatures t1 < t2. Suppose an atom in the metal consists of negatively charged electrons that travel near a positively charged nucleus. The atom can absorb and emit energy in any amount since the electron can move at any speed less than c. this classical picture of the atom fails for many reasons. If an electron is a classical particle oscillating about or orbiting around the nucleus, then it would emit electromagnetic radiation, lose energy, and crash into the nucleus.
