Glaucon: a man of courage and high spirits, moderate and educated courage and spirits will only be beneficial if it is properly trained. Glaucon and adeimantus were athenian citizens, educable, has skepticism and doubt but still committed to justice. Recall: need to talk about justice with people who are already committed to justice. Explaining pre-existing commitments to justice: already believe justice is worthy of respect. In shorter platonic dialogues, socrates was always ready to discuss ethical topics, whether the other party respects justice or not. State of perplexity: socrates would always say they need to return to the original question . Book one is similar to other shorter dialogues, a state of perplexity. Problem: can be destructive if people don"t find any stable foundation to their commitment. From book two to ten, more authoritative: have to consider who the targeted audience is.
