The countries of the global south are characterized by large rural population affected by rural poverty and underdevelopment most poor people live in rural areas. The rural population suffer from urban bias political and economic power concentrated in cities. Worsening socio-economic profile between rural and urban areas, particularly in terms of public goods such health care and education, and income earing opportunities are in evidence. This induces rural exodus which results in the crisis of urbanization and development of shanty towns around big cities: cont"d. More than half a billion people live in these countries, 49 percent of them on less than 1 dollar a day. In agriculture-based countries, agriculture accounts for about a third of overall economic growth. Sub-saharan african countries account for 90 percent of the rural population in agriculture based countries.
