POL208Y1 Lecture 12: War and Domestic Politics
Document Summary
Pol208 lecture 12: war and domestic politics and peace. Democratic states are more likely to be more peaceful, so the transition to democracy of all other states will lead to peaceful planet. Little statistical evidence that democracies are less prone to war than their authoritarian counterparts. Authoritarian governments and democratic governments both go to war at the same rates as the other, however democracies never go to war with other democracies, tend to be involved in conflicts with non-democratic states. Not particularly convincing, but it"s true that in the current environment the most democratic states in the international system are more likely not to make war with each other (north america and western europe) However, they have more in common than just democracy, they are all developed states with high standards of living and are able to provide for their populations in a very effective means.
