Document Summary

Blood-brain barrier: astrocytes, ventricles and csf, adult neurogenesis. None posted officially: relevant section (6th edition): Following are not assigned, they are my suggestions. Brain and spinal cord are protected from general circulation (blood) and the body. There"s a lot of stuff in the circulation, which is unwanted in the brain. Example would be hyperkalemia in the brain - dangerous. Ionic compositon of ecf around neuron is carefully controlled. Cannot change excitability of membrane (such as with kcl injection) Cannot have neurotransmitters floating around for no reason. Thus, this blood-brain barrier (bbb) isolates the ecf and neuron environment. There exists no barrier between interstitial fluid and csf, almost free diffusion. Identical chemical compositions - so it is not a true barrier. This is why there needs to be a barrier with csf and blood, solely why. Lack of dopamine in the body - but does not cross the blood-brain barrier.
