Document Summary

Ch 15: blood flow and control of bp. Lecture notes: the heart - cardiac muscle and cardiac ap. Adjustment of o2 and nutrient supply in diff physiologic states. Areas that do not need blood: fingernails, hair, outer layers of the skin. These areas are all dead - all keratinized tissue. Circulatory system is so pervasive because we need oxygen through to the tissues. Oxygen can only diffuse to a limited degree. Two pumps in series in a closed loop system - basically what it is. Important to know that it"s a closed loop - affecting one area affects all others. Important for resistance on blood vessels - downstream, upstream, and elsewhere have effects with this. Pulmonary circuit: blood gets oxygenated - right side of heart is responsible. Right ventricle --> pulmonary trunk --> pulmonary arteries --> lungs pulmonary veins return o2-rich blood to left atrium. Systemic circuit: blood gets distributed to deliver oxygen - left side of heart.
