Document Summary
Case: impaled with shard of broken bat as he headed from 3rd to home plate. Inside the lung - two kinds, both relative to outside. Alveolar pressure fluctuates between -1 and +1 mmhg. Injured side: atmospheric (due to puncture, leading to equilibrium) Uninjured side: -3 to -6 mmhg at rest (no puncture, so no change) Also recall that both pleural sacs are completely separate. This side could also be more negative than normal due to compensation effects on the good lung and bc of exercise. Symptoms would incl shortness of breath, pain, and shards sticking out. Treatment: patch up hole and reinflate the lungs. Cellular respiration: process of taking o2 and making atp. Can take air in through nose and mouth and passes to pharynx. Trachea branches into smaller branches into the lungs. Pleural membranes (sacs) are separate - right and left (not joined) Trachea covered in cartilage and smooth muscle, branches into the bronchus.
