Document Summary
Psy100h1 - lecture 3 - the embodied mind. Taking shortcuts opens us up to biases, which we"re often unaware. These biases can create all sorts of problems. Eg. top-down, bottom-down framework that you can impose on a situation. Stereotype organized system of expectations and beliefs (example of top-down framework); using stereotypes cannot be prevented as it is triggered in our subconscious. Biases can even create their own reality, because perception behaviour consequences. Eg. imagine if you believed everyone was a lying, manipulative, selfish cheater who would take advantage of you at the first opportunity. See the world and think in a different way than those who are optimistic. To a degree, thinking can create its own reality. Your behaviour can change another person"s reality/behaviour. Eg. if you"re are cold towards someone they will act cold towards you. Example of a feedback loop, where thoughts and beliefs generate and influence behaviour/biases in social reality.
