Document Summary

Neuroanatomical: major brain structures and their organization. Physiological: major contributions of physiological systems; eg. , autonomic nervous system, hormones, etc. Receive information from other neurons and transmit towards the cell body. Excitatory & inhibitory signals: this neuron is eventually going to decide, a binary decision to fire or not. It needs to receive more excitatory signals than inhibitory signals for it to fire. Keeps the neuron alive and determines whether it will fire or pass the information forward. Electrical regulation because of ion concentration difference across cell membrane (net negative inside!) Long fiber that conducts impulses away from the cell body. Absolute refractory period: ions have no where to go except for one direction. Wave of ion cascades traveling down the axon. It"s caused by build-up of positive charge, depolarizing a micro-section of the membrane at the axon hillock, setting in motion a domino-like effect of ion cascades.
