Document Summary
Neuroanatomical major structures of the brain. Physiological systems (nervous systems, hormones, etc. ) Social and environmental factors not neurochemical but affect neurochemical processes. Dendrites: receives information from other neurons and transmits them towards the cell, receives excitatory and inhibitory signals. To get the neuron to fire the net charge has to pass the threshold (between 40 and 55 mv) Axon: long fibre that conducts impulses away from the cell, succession of ion channels opening and closing. Terminal button: transmit information forward to other neurons through the release of neurotransmitters, fusion of vesicle to cell membrane, releasing neurotransmitters. Synapse: the space between the presynaptic membrane (axon terminal of neuron 1) and the postsynaptic membrane (dendrites of neuron 2) Wave of ion cascades travelling down the axon. Caused by the build-up of positive charge depolarizing a micro section of the membrane. Acetylcholine: peripheral nervous system: muscle and motor, central nervous system: higher cognition (learning/memory)
