Document Summary

Excitatory and inhibitory signals- this neuron will decide to send info forward or not. This depends on the kinds of signals it receives. Communication device that receives integrates and transmits forward. Excitatory signals decrease the negative charged make the cell body less negative. The cell has to depolarize (less negative) to a certain point called threshold point. Once it crosses threshold point, ion gates open and ions flood into axon hillock which depolarizes the next microsegment and then more ions fall in which depolarizes next section and so on. Build up of positive charge which depolarizes a micro section of the membrane at the axon hillock, setting in a motion domino like effect ion cascades. Terminal buttons transmit info forward to other neurons through release of neurotransmitters. Glutamate: excitatory: cognitive, seizures, motivation: gaba: inhibitory, seizures, anxiety; e. g. , anti-anxiety meds (benzodiazepines (valium, xanax) help.
