Document Summary
Psy100h1f lec0101 intro psychology: between stimulus and response there is a space . Victor frankel, wrote after leaving concentration camp. There is a mystery as to why we make sudden changes in our behaviour. Psychologists are interested in web of cause and effect. Psychology sits at this nexus between deterministic view and free will. Need to understand deterministic processes, but also appreciate the freedom we have to choose: why are you here? (studying psychology) Extrinsic reasons vs. intrinsic reasons --- example: i want to make money so i can buy a lot of things (extrinsic); i want to make money so i feel powerful (intrinsic). If you have intrinsic reasons (deep meaningful stuff, deeply caring about something), they will win out over extrinsic motivations, especially over a long period of time. Extrinsic motivations tend to burn out faster than intrinsic motivations. By choosing we get to take reality and choose our own adventure or story: communicating with each other.
