Monkeys able to solve puzzles with ease: rewarding monkeys interfered w/ ability to solve puzzles (more frustration, giving up sooner, etc, addition of reward turned game into work, change way monkey thinks about game. Adopting diff. frame can cause self-regulatory system to work better (or worse) External regulation/motivation: rewards, punishments, authority command, social pressure, etc: operant conditioning, easy to measure & manipulate. Interjected regulation: partial internalization of reward, punishment; contingent self- esteem, ego-involvement. Activity goes from fascination w/ learning to how well you"re going to do on test. Internalized reward/punishment system and hooked it up to self-esteem: good mark = validation, bad mark = you feel bad. Motivation will diminish if you experience many blows to ego. Identified & integrated regulation: personal valuation and importance, integration w/ values, life goals, self concept, etc: congruent w/ deep sources of personal meaning. Intrinsic regulation/motivation: doing things for sake of doing, engagement, flow, enjoyment, growth, challenge, etc.
