Psy100 - lecture 13 - memory, thinking and motivation. Memories are biased and can"t always be accurate. Last time, when we thought there was a word in each list, when there wasn"t. You"re telling a story at a party, when your friend suddenly bursts out laughing. It was his story that he told you previously. Confidence in your memory has no correlation to the accuracy of a memory. Even if you"re 100% confident in a memory, you have a 30% chance of being mistaken. Researchers have been able to induce people to recall complicated events from early in life that never actually happened, such as getting lost in a shopping mall. People can fit in details that would be the experience even if it never happened to them. Fake disneyland commercial featuring bugs bunny shown to a group of people. 1/3rds of them recall meeting bugs bunny at disneyland as a kid. Bugs bunny is a not a disney character!
