Document Summary
Erikson"s central concept is that development is driven by the resolution of a central crisis that defines each stage of development. If the crisis is resolved then the individual gains important skills and abilities that take them into the next stage of development--if not the person faces challenges going forward. The child must learn to trust their caregivers and from this learn a basic trust in the world. If the basic trust does not develop then the child will have a basic mistrust in the world. If the child resolves the crisis successfully they will have confidence that their actions are effective. Failure to resolve this crisis will result in a child who will doubt themselves. Success means the child will develop a sense of purpose while failure means a sense of guilt. Success and the child will feel capable of achieving their goals while failure leaves them feeling inferior.
