Document Summary

Biological psychology: optional bio psych tutorial (led by psyh100 ta josh) will be held on wednesday, 26. Pns: everything beyond the central nervous system: somatic nervous system, autonomic nervous system, sympathetic nervous system, parasympathetic nervous system. Neurons are the basic unit of the nervous system, operate through electrical impulses and communicate with each other through chemical signals: three types of neurons ( same sensory afferent, motor efferent, sensory (afferent, motor (efferent) Neurons dire action potentials, the neural impulse that passes along the axon and subsequently causes the release of chemicals from the axon terminal through the synaptic cleft. Resting potential: polarized state (more negative inside the cell ~ -70 mv) Excitatory signals: increase the likelihood that the neuron will fire (they depolarize the cell) Inhibitory signals: decrease the likelihood that the neuron will fire (they hyperpolarize the cell: they do this by affect the polarization of the cell. Neurons fire/generate an action potential if the excitatory input reaches threshold.
