Westerners tend to describe themselves as individualistic whereas easterners describe themselves as collective. Origins of self knowledge: family and other socializing agents- parents and other family members can teach socially appropriate behavior to kids either directly or indirectly. They are more assertive, dominant, achievement oriented and conscientious: the younger siblings develop in ways that make them inclined to challenge the family status quo. They are more agreeable and open to new ideas: when asked to report their self-views, young adolescents exhibited greater activity relative to adults in neural systems relevant to both self-perception and perspective taking. They got a bunch of students to describe themselves: they examined the descriptions and found out that these students spent more time describing how they are different/unique from others.
