Psychology as a discipline has emerged from questions that belonged in philosophy and physiology. Over the last 30 to 40 years or so 1960s in sync with the invent of computers and information processing type metaphors. How do the parts work together to perpetuate a state of depression?: physiological: major contributions of physiological systems (e. g. autonomic nervous system, hormones, etc. Take the first three levels you might end up with a highly individualistic concept of consciousness. We need to consider what this body is adapting to, what we are being influenced by. It becomes very difficult to look at consciousness from all five levels at once. We carve this holistic totality into sections that are more manageable. These levels are far too complex to be an expert in all of these things. We need to look at them from sub-processes level. An ant has its own internal processes, but really doesn"t mean anything if it"s just by itself.
