Eating Dinner together: the key to happy families:
This study shows that when families have more frequent family dinners,
their children are at less of a risk to use drugs and substance abuse.
However, there are many third-variable causes and different causal
directions.
It is very easy to make simple methodological errors, and to draw
conclusions that are highly questionable.
Think of four things when you hear about research findings:
1. The operationalization of variables.
2. Validity (construct, internal, external)
3. 3rd Variable explanations
4. Confounds

Highlight: Genetic research has provided deep insights into who we are; e.g., the
nature-nurture debate.
Key points on genes:
1.Looking at yourself from the perspective of a gene: genes play extremely
intimate roles in determining who we are, influencing how intelligent we
are, our personalities, behaviours, and diseases.
2.Most phenomena do not boil down to a single gene, but to combinations of
genes. Think in terms of interactions among multiple genes, rather than
discovering THE gene for X.
3.Nature and nurture INTERACT to produce behaviour. Gene expression
**(on test) whether or not a gene is turned on or activated.
Study on MAO measured genetic characteristics (MAO)
Longitudinal: follow same individuals over time (infancy to age 26)
Measured quality of parenting (ages 3-11)
Measured violent, anti-social tendencies (4 different ways, e.g., criminal
records, psychiatric assessment.)
