Document Summary

Correlational research: measuring the degree of association between two variables: direction: Positive correlation, both variables change in the same direction, i. e. g. both up or down. Negative, as one goes up the other goes down, example hours of sleep and irritability. Zero correlation, one does not directly influence the other. o. Strength of correlation: how closely are changes in one variable linked to changes in the other: correlation coefficient: +1 very strong positive correlation, -1 very strong negative correlation, correlation is not causation. Don"t know if a--> b or b-->a, or both are caused by c o. Experimental research is how we control variables in order to test causation. Could be unfamiliar environment, make sure that the alternative explanation is rules out. This is controlling for a confounding variable: a variable outside the researchers control that might affect of provide an alternative explanation for the results. Placebo effect is the classic example of a confounding variable.
