PSY220H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Intermittent Explosive Disorder, Social Learning Theory, Relational Aggression
Document Summary
Aggression broadly defined as behaviour intended to harm other individuals. We can divide it into two main types of aggression: Emotional or hostile aggression: inflicting harm for it"s own sake (aggressive behaviour is the end point, you"re just trying to hurt them) Instrumental aggression: inflicting harm not bc u wanna hurt the other person but bc you"re trying to obtain something of value (aggression is the means to some other end) In a study, it"s important to look at how aggression is defined and operationalized. Direct verbal aggression: to their face; yelling, insulting, threatening etc. Indirect aggression: spreading a rumour behind someone"s back, telling a lie. Trying to harm someone"s relationship w/ other ppl. Doing things to try to attack the person"s reputation There"s a belief that males are more physically aggressive and females more socially aggressive. Found evidence that if more likely to be physically aggressive, also more likely to be indirectly aggressive.
