PSY220H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Symbolic Racism, Social Dominance Orientation, Implicit-Association Test
Document Summary
First half of 20th century: racism was not considered inappropriate and was often encouraged. Second half of 20th century: prejudice against ethnic and racial minorities considered socially unacceptable. Outwardly acting unprejudiced while inwardly maintaining prejudiced attitudes. White ps were in a position to give aid to a white or black person in need. If ps thought they were the only ones who could help, they helped the black person somewhat more (94%) than the white person (81%) If ps believed that others were present who could help, they helped the black person less often (38%) than the white person (75%) Ps who scored high or low on explicit prejudice toward blacks rated black & white applicants to college. When applicants excelled on all relevant dimensions, ps gave similar ratings to black. When applicants excelled on some, but not all dimensions, those ps who were high on explicit prejudice rated black applicants less favourably than white applicants.
