Main patterns show - characterized by speci c waves/stages of sleep: N1: falling asleep, might kick yourself awake, can be involuntary (5% of the night) N2: first stage of sleep; don"t respond to stimuli from onwards. Sleep cycles: overall pattern of waking to deep sleep to rem etc (each cycle 1. 5-2h) N1: dream-like experience, hypnological thinking , can problem solve in this state if you think about a problem right before you reach n1, you can problem solve in your hypnotic state. N2 & n3: dream state (similar to rem) less associative. Rem: when waken up, not being able to dream . Occurs when parts of the brain are out of sync. Thalamus (relates sensory and motor info) if signal isn"t being recieved, person can"t experience it. Explains why ppl who fall down stairs don"t wake up. Self monitoring must be intact for us to experience our self.
