Document Summary
Monozygotic twin studies: separate the twins, and look at whether the both develop the same disorder (concordance rate); concordance rate for schizophrenia 50% (therefore it is a biological disorder) Double depression: major depression and dysthymic disorder: extremely difficult to treat. It is not abnormal to be depressed, but if you can"t shake it off, it"s not normal. --major depression (sad affect) can be mistaken with schizophrenia b/c of catatonia; extreme -feelings of sadness that persist, and a loss of interest in previous sources of pleasure. Biological component: the chances of you suffering from it are quite high if a family member had it. Cognitive behavioural therapy is effective, and medication works too, which means there"s a biological and environmental component. Melancholia dsm says it"s a lower level of sad affect that may or may not be pathological; symptoms: slow speech + slow movement + loss of interest. If it is classified as a pathology, it"s more responsive to medications.
