Document Summary

Datesocial learning and cognition: social learning: copying what is seen. Bandura did an experimental study of social learning to see if aggressive behaviour in adults would be copied by children. The results showed strong learning in the absence of any specific reinforcement (which challenges behaviorist approaches). Meaning that this kind of learning cannot be explained in simple stimulus-response terms, that there is more complex cognitive processing in play. If we were to view social learning as true imitation, then it would be possible that actions could be copied without complex cognitive operations. This way it would be more compatible with behaviorist theories. True imitation copies specific actions learned from another, simple forms of this type of learning are emulation, observational conditioning, contagion and stimulus enhancement. Emulation means that someone wants to achieve the same goal that was observed but in a different way.
