Document Summary

Cribriform plate a bony structure riddled with tiny hole that separates the nose from the brain: axons from osns pass through the tiny holes to enter the brain. Olfactory receptors make directly contact with the brain without a protective barrier. Olfactory nerves first pair of cranial nerves. Olfactory bulb where olfactory information is first being processed: mitral cells the main projective output neurons, glomeruli spherical conglomerates containing the incoming axons of the osns. Primary olfactory cortex an area includes the amygdala, parahippocampal gyrus and entorhinal cortex that first process the information. Entorhinal cortex cortical region where major inputs are associated in the hippocampus. Includes hippocampus, amygdala, anterior thalamic nucleus, septum, limbic cortex and fornix. Sensation gives neural response to that scent, whereas perception happens when we are aware of that scent (cells firing). The feel of scent: odor can trigger these somatosensory receptors which are present in the nose, these sensations are mediated by the trigeminal nerve (cranial nerve v).
